With the warm weather season upon us, hydration becomes more and more important. Did you know that water alone is not the best option for hydrating? In fact, drinking large amounts of plain water when you're also sweating a lot can cause a condition called hyponatremia. This is basically when you don't have enough sodium in your blood to keep the fluid there because you're replacing only the water while sweating the sodium out (remember osmosis and diffusion from high school chem?). The fluid then moves out into your cells instead, causing swelling in bad places like...your brain! Severe hyponatremia can cause nausea, vomiting, confusion, and in some cases seizure and death. Okay, that's pretty scary, but not to worry, some basic precautions will help you hydrate properly and prevent problems. If you're heading into a particularly long sweaty workout, try options like NUUN tablets, OSMO, or Cliff Hydration to help replace the electrolytes you're sweating out. You can find all of those on Amazon. That little bit of sugar in there too is also necessary for proper hydration (earmuffs, more chemistry). Otherwise, drink to thirst throughout the day (a rough measure is making sure urine color is pale yellow, not too dark or too clear), and be sure to eat plenty of good quality food and produce which carry their own electrolytes. Happy hydrating!
